The Darling Buds of May Sound Analysis

Sound is used to represent regional identity in the “The Darling Buds of May” by the use of dialogue. The man of the family says the line of dialogue “Never read no form.” This shows they have a regional identity and accent where they don’t use grammatically correct sentences and they have lack of education and English skills. This is also reflected in his wife’s dialogue when she says “Sure we never.” In comparison, the tax man in the suit is the complete opposite to this and speaks very formally with correct grammar and proper English.  The non-diegetic use of jaunty, happy, upbeat music as the couple are driving along in the truck shows regional identity as it is the stereotype of a jolly, happy, couple living in the countryside. There is also a sound bridge linking the family man in the truck and the tax man together as they are about to collide. Throughout the extract, there is a lot of positive, friendly language used. For example, “sweetheart”, “lovely” and “perfect”. This shows how welcoming and happy the people from this regional area are stereotyped to be in comparison to people who live in the city. There is also lots of ambient sounds used when at the house, for example cows mooing, sheep’s baaing and ducks quacking. This shows the regional identity is deep in the country and animal orientated. 

Reflection on Editing Task

Whilst filming and editing our clip, my group had a few different problems. One of the main problems was the lack of basic knowledge we had on how to use the cameras, and mac computers to actually create and edit the clip. We all struggled at first on how to work both these things, but over time and once we had got used to it, it became a lot easier. It was also hard to visualize how all the different shots and little mini clips we had taken would fit together to make a story line but after a lot of editing, we achieved this. We also found it hard to do match on set but think we finally got it in the end. 

I think our shot reverse shot went well because it showed the facial expressions and emotions on each character's face one after the after so showed they were talking to each other. We also had a accurate eyeline match between Jess and Conaill to make the argument they were having look more realistic as we jumped from character to character.
