Product Placement

Product Placement

What is product placement? An adverting technique used by companies to subtly promote their products through a non-traditional advertising technique, usually through appearances in film, television or other media. Product placements are often initiated through an agreement between a product manufacturer and the media company in which the media company receives economic benefit. A company will often pay a fee to have their product used, displayed, or significantly featured in a movie or show. For example, Coca-Cola could pay a given fee to have the title character drinking a Coke, instead of a Pepsi.

TV advertisement: Product placement for music magazines may not be as apparent like TV as there's not many places they can be advertised on. You may see a music magazine through specialised TV advertisements on music channels that are specific to the genre of music. This would be a good product placement for a music magazine because it would be advertising directly to their target audience. However, it is rare to see a music magazine in a TV show or movie as this is only likely to get them limited advertisement and the viewers of that TV show or movie may not be interested in them. .

Distribution: I will distribute my magazine mainly on the internet, but also in some shops, newsagents and book shops. I will heavily advertise via social media because this is where I think my target audience of 16-24 year olds spend a lot of their time. I will also offer a subscription of my magazines so customers are able to pay a set fee for the magazine delivered to them monthly.

    Survey Analysis

My results for this question show that there is a varied taste of music among the people that that took my survey. However, R&B came out as most popular as one third of people surveyed chose this as their favourite genre of music. This is favourable as it means my survey is accurately targeted at the right audience and their answers will help me develop a magazine that will be suited to an R&B fan's desires.

My results for this question show that a third of people do/sometimes read music magazines. This statistic shows that these people are potential customers. Two thirds of the people that took my survey said they didn't read music magazines. However, this doesn't mean that they are not willing to read a music magazine, it may be because there is not an already existing magazine that they feel is worth reading. Therefore I value their opinion on what they would like to be included in a music magazine very highly as they are likely to have specifics on what they think makes a good magazine and is worth buying as they do not currently have an interest in reading them.

This question showed that 7 out of 12 people would be interested in buying an R&B magazine. This is a successful statistic as looking back to the first question, 4 out of 12 people said R&B was their favourite music genre, showing that people who prefer other genres would still be interested in buying an R&B magazine.

This question shows the reason why the 5 people stated they weren't interested in buying an R&B music magazine. The majority of people are uninterested in buying an R&B magazine because this specific type of music genre doesn't appeal to them. However, their opinion is still vaild as they may have read other music magazines of a different genre. Therefore they have knowledge of the magazine market and can suggest what they think an R&B magazine should be like and how it should differ to the genre of magazines they read.

The majority of people said they would spend £1-£2 on a magazine which suggest they do not expect a high quality magazine with lots of pages and would prefer a shorter, less complex magazine. This reflects my target market of 16-24 year olds - a lot of these people are likely to be students and not have a lot of disposable income to spend on things such as magazines so would prefer a lower price. However, 3 put of 12 people said they would be willing to spend £3-£5 on a music magazine which means they would expect the magazine to be finished to a high quality and standard, containing a lot of pages.

The name "The Beat" came out with the vast majority of the votes, 7 out of 11 people though this was the best name for an R&B magazine. This shows that "The Beat" is a very popular option for my magazine which I will take in to consideration. R&B takeover also had 2 votes so this still could be a possibility.

This question shows that the most popular content to read about is interviews with artists and upcoming music events. Therefore when I make my magazine I will try incorporate the two by doing an interview with an artist and then also mentioning their upcoming concert/gig and if they are playing at any festivals/events.

This question shows that the majority of people would like to see a magazine published either fortnightly or monthly and the minority would be willing to pay for a magazine weekly. This could again reflect my target market and the lack of disposable income to spend on a magazine weekly.

75% of people who answered this question said they think the most appropriate colour scheme for an R&B magazine targeted at 16-24 year olds would be a mixture of both bright and dark colours. I was pleased with this result as a colour scheme I had in mind would feature purple, black and white which is a mixture of bright and dark colours which the people who took the survey thought would be most appropiate.

    Survey Results

To enhance my knowledge on what my target audience want from a R&B music magazine, I created a survey using 'survey monkey' to collect results from 10 individuals. This gave me an insight of what my target audience anticipate from an R&B magazine and what I need to do to make it a success.

    Prelim Task - School Magazine

    Prelim Task - School Magazine

    Prelim Task - Contents Page

    Evaluation

Did you plan your magazine? If not, what have you learnt about the importance of research and planning?

I did not plan my magazine for the prelim task, however I did look at existing school magazines that students had made to get some ideas of how I was going to form the layout and the kind of things I wanted to include.

What technology did you use to complete the task and how did you use it?

I used the software 'Serif publications'. I used this to design my cover page and contents page. This software allowed me to play around with different effects and techniques on the fonts and the pictures.

Did you encounter any difficulties? If so, what were they and how did you overcome them?

At first, I found it quite hard getting used to the software and working out how to operate it and what did what. However, I overcome this by asking someone for help on what each different element did and they just gave me a basic understanding of how Serif works and how to operate it. . I also found it hard to choose an overall colour scheme and house style because I didn't know whether I wanted to make the magazine formal and direct or appeal to the younger audiences (the students).

How successful was your magazine? Please identify what worked well, and with hindsight, what would you improve/do differently?

I think that my magazine was quite successful because it identifies as a formal, school magazine. I think what went well was the cutting out of my main image on the front cover and how the colours all work well together and how I have used the colour of the tie the teacher is wearing on the front cover for the text and some other features. However I think it could be improved in several ways. One being that I think the lack of knowledge on using different effects and not knowing the software really showed in regards to how basic the technology skill is. In the future of this coursework task, I would make sure that I have learned more about how to use Serif and what good effects I can use to make my magazine look like a proper magazine.  This has taught me to not just be settle with the first draft that I do but instead use different software like photo editing to try out new things that could improve it.
